LOL....2 piece thing ? Think about whats in a surround sound AVR. Tuner-processor-pre amp- dac- amplifier. That's 5 separate pieces we used to have. Think about the space that took up too. Now look at an AVR and it's size....you think compromises were made to squeeze everything into that one box ? Damn straight, with the biggest being the separate power supplies for each, now being shared by each component in the AVR. See the difference ? See what a separate power supply,aka..your amplifier's effect has on the sound ?
Getting the picture yet ? Enter the world of dacs and your game will improve even further. Then enter pre amps, tubed pre amps....and we may just have to take you to the wacky ward it will blow your mind that much. Seriously...separates are the way to go for ultimate sound quality. Not the only way, but the way to give you the most flexibility in tailoring the sound to how you like it.

I only own one surround AVR...it's a Yamaha and it's collecting dust since I figured out I prefer simple easier to operate 2 channel systems...but I digress.
There will be a day when the HK 3490 is replaced by an honest preamp, just what is not known yet, but I am beginning the research into that piece. I know I have a few requirements (like friggin bass and treble controls...NEED those)and it's gotta sound good with the Parasound, I have a strong feeling I'll be keeping it for years to come. Just did it for me and that says a lot as I'm picky when it comes to stuff that "does it for me". No we aren't talking about staining the couch but that moment when you realize, this is good stuff.
A tube pre might be on the radar, might not be, might be all SS, and I am also considering a DAC to handle stuff from the digital sources, the one in the PS3 just isn't up to whats in the HK as far as I'm concerned so that's why the 3490 remains as the pre, I tried the 3375 and analog from the PS3 to it and was disappointed. Plus I don't see anyone selling a "high" quality A/V cable for the Playstation soooo optical out is where it's at now.
