I don't know if this is the right place for this.
"Digital Medium" covers all things not analog. The merits of digital vs analog is an on going and very fun discussion.
When talking digital on an audio nut level, I most times find myself in shallow water. I play digital files (as do we all). Tunes downloaded to an ipod thing are great fun, but to link those to other digital is not realistic.
Actually, some of the best digital I have is converted analog LPs.

As long as your using a lossless format in down loading or converting your LP's, why not ?
MP3 doesn't even belong in an audiophile discussion. It may have it's place in the world, but not for anyone serious about musical reproduction.
Whats your digital look like ? System....gear....playback ?

As long as your using a lossless format in down loading or converting your LP's, why not ? MP3 doesn't even belong in an audiophile discussion. It may have it's place in the world, but not for anyone serious about musical reproduction. Whats your digital look like ? System....gear....playback ? I have been playing digital tunes since day one in the 90's. I am not an audiophile.I believe mp3 does have a place in the audiophile experience, but what do I know? I don't use that format, but once I did. In a blind test, 320 will fool most people. Indoors my format leans about 75/25 to analog as I have records I bought back to the 60's. My present TT and tube amps are not cutting edge, but I will proudly put them up in a fun "play off". I mostly play tunes on the porch, and here tunes are 99% digital. I have been working on this system for years. I have a tiny computer out here on my RedNeck porch I assembled for audio using knowledge of trail and error and what I learned on digital forums. Digital is a rather new venue in audio for old farts, and I have been reading and adjusting for years. To build any system you need time. You can't walk in, plunk down $$ and be happy if you care about the tunes. It takes time and lots of good beer to assemble a system. The time and $$ is less if you have audiophile friends. I use a solid state drive so no fan is needed, and use a BenchMark DAC/pre to avoid all onboard audio. The entire computer is the size of two VCRs, (using it to type this as the Rolling Stones blast the night). People (us) are always coming up with new ideas and I like that. Being an audio nut, not an audiophile, just want to play tunes and be entertained as best I can . I don't want the guy up the road to be able to sit on his 'porch couch' (a Southern thing) and hear Sarah Brightman at a better level than me, so I upgrade when I discover better. My experience is that "simple" wins the day. Most experts on line are idiots in my opinion. You see them quoting others with little "hands on experience" or just being a shill for $$. My porch digital system (plays to this old chair, not the yard) would amaze some audiophiles as to the sound. As an audio nut, it entertains me.

Did you mean your entire computer is the size of two VCR TAPES or two VCR machines?

Don't mention "white" zinfandel if your ever in Napa. They'll throw you out on your head while proclaiming "Zinfandel is Red Moron". No joke....
Agent,
As long as what your hearing pleases you, I could give a rats ass if it's 2 squirrels playing banjos. I only ask as to maybe some of us boneheads can maybe make some suggestions to further your journey, that's all.
I always try to refrain from using the term "audiophile". It seems over the years that word has taken on a different meaning of "Snobbery". Which I disagree with although we certainly have our share of snobs in this industry.

"MP3 doesn't even belong in an audiophile discussion. It may have it's place in the world, but not for anyone serious about musical reproduction."I disagree. In a blind test, few can pick them out, even did one myself with some guys who are real audiophiles. I can post links? A good quality mp3 sounds very good. I don't use them as drive space is so cheap these days, but ....? I may have a CD left I could sent you? "Did you mean your entire computer is the size of two VCR TAPES or two VCR machines?"Computers can be small depending on purpose. You digital watch is a computer as is anything (CD Players, DVD players) that plays tunes. The $25 Walmart CD Walkman is a computer. Here is a link to mine with photos and talk on Computer tunes: yardcraphome.com/showthread.php?1101-COMPUTER-AUDIO&p=9869&viewfull=1#post9869i have a lot of research into that as to tune playback.

Even with my ROCK hardened ears, I find the playback is often a giveaway. Not one is better, but different. Blind testing is very hard. Testing with electronic gear is what it is, but matters less in the human world. I have gone to extremes to test HD downloads against my Flac files. Audio is a hobby I enjoy. The slight difference in a wire or an amp is exciting, but I see it for what it is - slight. I put a few quality tunes on a CD in REDBOOK and the same tunes in quality mp3. I mixed them randomly. Guys could play them on their home gear. These were actual audiophiles not afraid of being wrong or right as they had nothing personally to prove. The results were interesting, and I am positive all stand behind their observations. Don't be afraid to join YardCrap - the web can't have too many places for us to waste time -

If you can't tell the difference, then maybe your hearing is compromised. Many things in audio offer "slight" differences, that's not disputable. But add up a few slight differences and you have a huge one. Slight difference in cables, slight difference in source...files/cd's...all add up to make a profound difference. If it doesn't bother you, heck more power to ya, rock on. Even my wife, a non audiophile can pick out an MP3 over pretty much anything.

Well, now; that depends on if it's a 128kbps or 320kpbs bitrate file. 336kpbs files are REALLY difficult to distinguish from lossless files.

While the 320 is noticeably better than 128, I think the more revealing your system is, the more apparent the differences. This holds especially true the farther up the chain you move in your system.
