Well since I lost the fight with the girlfriend and whatnot, I now have a HT system, no pics yet as I'm in the process of putting the whole system together and the room is getting tidied up at the same time but the equipment is
Onkyo TX-NR717. Parasound HCA-1200II driving the RTiA7 towers. RTiA3s out back. CSiA6 front and center. Everything above running full range, don't feel the need to limit anythings frequency response. Klipsch KSW-10 Sub just for a little extra kick, don't need much since the mains are big and powered nicely. PS3 as the movie player and primary game machine, Optical connection to the AVR. Marantz CD6004 as a music player. Other sources are a AppleTV 3, XBox 360 and a Mac Mini.
Great 2 channel rig and should magically turn into a full on HT setup with a flick of a button.

Doesn't the play station have HDMI....so you get get the newer surround sound codecs from Blu-ray and higher rez music on Blu-ray ? Optical will only get you DD and DTS. Believe me...it's worth it.

Yes the PS3 has HDMI out, BUT here's the reason why I'm still doing optical to the AVR for audio. My favourite PS3 game...well, great game play, it's a load of fun however the soundtrack, SUCKS! Not only does the audio quality bite the big one but the music selection leaves a LOT to be desired. So while playing said game, I'll have the video on screen but usually have the CDP or iPod feeding music. If I hook up the PS3 via HDMI to the AVR, I'll lose that ability, unless while fucking around in set up I can manage to assign the TV/CD analog audio input to a HDMI input...to replace the HDMI audio for this game. Oh and unlike the whiners in the gaming area over yonder, I personally don't give a crap if I hear a car coming up behind me or not...I'd rather have better tunes.

Well....Blu-ray music discs offer up better tunes. Try a concert disc in Blu-ray....it'll open your eyes bro. As far as your problem with the games audio quality, can't you just turn the audio off in the PS3 when playing that game ? Or add a hdmi switch box...which is cheap, one cable going in from the PS3....2 coming out. One can simply go to the tv for the game, the other to the stereo for movies and music.
Or simply pick up a separate BR player for movies and music.....pretty cheap used these days, leave the PS3 for gaming.

Eh if I wanted to I could pick up a Sony BDP-S5100 for under a C-Note...and also be able to get my feet a little wet with SACD and just use the machine as a transport. Granted not using the internal DAC but what's in the 717...far superior to the DAC in the PS3 I might say albeit nowhere on the level a separate DAC would be but you know...it's just better.

You hook up the HDMI out from a BR player for movies and hook up the analog outs, if it has those, to the inputs on the receiver to take advantage of the better dacs built in.

erm the plan IS to hook up say a S5100 to the AVR with HDMI...it'll force the AVR to do the D/A conversion and audio decoding, essentially reducing the unit down to basically a transport, correct ? Something like that doesn't have analog or even an optical audio out. It does appear to have digital coaxial out but eh the single cable solution might be a touch simpler.
